My Story: About My Journey in Medical Billing
I grew up with a mom who was a nurse, so healthcare was always familiar to me. I also knew from a pretty young age that direct patient care wasn't going to be my calling-I'm a little too squeamish! What I eventually discovered was that there was an entire side of healthcare happening behind the scenes, and that was where I found my place.Â
My medical billing journey began before I graduated high school, working part-time in a chiropractor's office. This was when patient ledgers were still kept on paper and insurance claims were typed on a typewriter and mailed. I later moved into front-desk responsibilities, learning demographics, insurance eligibility, patient payments. Those early experiences taught me something I still believe today: the revenue cycle begins long before a claim is submitted.Â
I also became certified in medical transcription and, for a while, worked in-office as a medical biller while doing transcription on the side. The training gave me a great foundation in medical terminology, but I eventually learned that spending hours using the foot pedals of a transcription machine was definitely not for me!Â
After gaining several years of hands-on billing experience, I decided to take AAPC's Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam. I hadn't attended a traditional coding program, and more than a few people questioned whether I could pass based primarily on experience. I passed on my first attempt!Â
From there, my career continued to evolve. I worked full-time in internal medicine while beginning part-time remote billing for nephrology and physical therapy. Eventually, I transitioned into fully remote work-first billing full-time spending 10 years focused primarily on physical therapy.Â
Later, I began exploring mental health billing, which opened the door to another area of revenue cycle management and ultimately helped lead me toward the biggest step in my career: going out on myÂ
own.Â
After more than 25 years in medical billing, I finally embraced the fear of entrepreneurship and created Peak Health Billing LLC. Today, my work primarily focuses on mental health and primary care, while always remaining open to explore new opportunities.Â
Looking back, my career was never a perfectly mapped-out plan. It grew from one opportunity, one challenge, and one leap of faith to the next from paper ledgers and typewritten claims to remote revenue cycle management and owning my own billing company.
